Open Interoperable Platform for Unified Access &
Analysis of Earth Observation Data

APRIL 2019

About the project

EOPEN provides a platform targeting non-expert Earth Observation (EO) data users (non-traditional user communities), experts and the SME community that reveals and makes Copernicus data and services easy to use for Big Data applications by providing EO data analytics services, decision making and infrastructure to support the Big Data processing life-cycle allowing the chaining of value-adding activities across multiple platforms.
Success Story

SUCCESS IN MULTIMEDIA SATELLITE TASK IN MEDIAEVAL18

CERTH-ITI team had the best performing visual and fusion method and the second overall score among all teams in MediaEval18 – Multimedia Satellite Task. The goal of the Flood classification for social multimedia task was to retrieve all images from social media which provide direct evidence for passability of roads by conventional means (no boats, off-the-road vehicles, monster trucks, Hummer, Landrover, farm equipment). The objective was to design a system/algorithm/method that (in principle) given any collection of flood related multimedia images and their metadata (e.g., Twitter, Flickr, YFCC100M) is able to identify those images that (a) provide evidence for road passability and (b) to discriminate between images showing passable vs. non passable roads. Analysis of social media images and fusion of textual and visual information on a very ambiguous test collection using the team’s DCNN architecture led to the first ranking position out of ten teams with respect to the given evaluation metric (average F1-score).

Events

USER REQUIREMENTS MEETING (11-12 APRIL 2018)

The EOPEN User Requirements meeting took place on 11-12 April 2018 in Vicenza, Italy, with many stakeholders being present. The purpose of the meeting was to collect user requirements from the engagement with local end user community and stakeholder groups. The meeting was also mentioned in the Italian press and supported the final formulation of the use case scenarios.

15TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION SYSTEMS FOR CRISIS RESPONSE (20-23 MAY 2018)

In synergy with the H2020-beAWARE project, the EOPEN poster was presented at the 15th International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management (ISCRAM2018) on 20-23 May 2018, in Rochester NY, USA. One of the EOPEN use cases focuses in crisis response using Earth Observation and other data, so the associated data fusion mechanisms were discussed with other information systems for crisis response.

POSTER SESSION IN INSPIRE CONFERENCE (18-21 SEPTEMBER 2018)

EOPEN participated with a poster to the INSPIRE conference in Antwerp, Belgium from 18 to 21 September, 2019.  Discussions with other poster representatives were useful, especially related to standardisation and innovation.

2019 CONFERENCE ON BIG DATA FROM SPACE (19-21 FEBRUARY 2019)

An EOPEN AI functionality was presented in ESA Big Data from Space 2019 (BiDS’19) conference in Munich, relevant to a road passability estimation from satellite imagery. An oral presentation was given by CERTH, presenting the methodology and the designed mockup interface of the proposed service. Climate change is also associated with extreme weather events, where this service is very relevant and helpful to the stakeholder community of EOPEN.

1ST TECHNICAL MEETING (26-27 FEBRUARY 2019)

The first EOPEN Technical meeting was held on 26-27 February 2019 in Stuttgart, Germany, mainly for the purposes of the first EOPEN prototype. Fruitful conversations between technical partners and comments from end user partners have been proven really valuable for the progress of the EOPEN platform integration. Dedicated technical sessions will also be part of the agenda in all future project plenary meetings.

Future Events

INFO DAY (SEPTEMBER 2019)

AAWA is going to organize an Info Day to present the EOPEN platform to stakeholders related to the Use Case they are leading (PUC1: Flood risk assessment and prevention). Some interactive tests are also foreseen.

40TH ASIAN CONFERENCE ON REMOTE SENSING (OCTOBER 2019)

During #ACRS2019 in South Korea, EOPEN's first prototype will be presented, illustrating the three Use Cases that are being implemented as examples of its usage - the Use Case about Food Security focused over a pilot area in Asia (South Korea) will be addressed in detail. EOPEN session in ACRS is expected to be a field of interactive communication between the consortium and potential stakeholders. A plenary meeting will follow the session and diverse comments will be wrapped up into a concrete feedback.

EOPEN in the press

The EOPEN project has been presented under the section "ricerca&innovazione" of the Italian magazine "Platinum", issue 63 of November 2018, supplement of the newspaper "Sole24 Ore".

The article reads "The European Copernicus Program has thoroughly changed the perspective in the usage of Earth Observation Satellite data, which was limited to experts up to several years ago; according to Guido Vingione - Serco Italia Copernicus Service Director - its effectiveness is twofold, either by easing EO satellite data access or complementing it with non-EO data; since two years Serco has been coordinating the H2020 EOPEN Project aimed to non-experts of EO data thus professionals, allowing them to implement their activities and services implying big data handling through cloud computing; EOPEN novelty is the merging and integration of in-situ data (ancillary data) needed for EO data interpretation and non-EO data (e.g. social media) data favouring their wider exploitation. Roberto Mulatti, Serco Italia Managing Director, points out the IT and EO data exploitation service provided to ESA for many years, relying on personnel, including specializations in scientific topics, and, also, participating to the recent discovery of water on Mars."
